Steatosis (fatty liver disease) is a common condition caused by an excess of fat in the liver. A healthy liver contains very little fat. It becomes an issue when fat accounts for 5% to 10% of the weight of your liver. In most cases, the fatty liver disease does not cause serious problems or prevent your liver from functioning normally. However, the fatty liver disease worsens over time in 7% to 30% of people with the condition. It is broken down into three stages: The inflammation (swelling) of your liver causes tissue damage. The medical term for this stage is steatohepatitis. Scar tissue forms where your liver has been injured. This is referred to as fibrosis. On a large scale, scar tissue replaces healthy tissue.
