Dr. Rajesh Upadhyay is Senior Director & Head, Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Max Super Specialty Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, New Delhi. He is Dean, Indian College of Physicians 2021-22 and has been President, Association of Physicians of India (API) 2015-16. He is a member of the Specialist Advisory Board (Gastroenterology), National Board of Examinations, Steering Committee Member of the Global Alliance for Medical Education (GAME), Director-Indian Confederation for Healthcare Accreditation (ICHA) and Governing Body Member at AIIMS, Patna. He has also served as International Advisor, Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons, Glasgow UK.
A recipient of many National Awards and Honours such as, Dr. B C Roy National Award, IMA National Award- ‘Distinguished Medical Men for their contribution of highest order in the field of Medicine’, Dr. V. Parmeshwara Life Time Achievement Award and Hon. National IMA Professor.
He is a renowned gastroenterologist in India with expertise and extraordinary achievements in treating patients with digestive, pancreato-biliary and liver diseases and has performed thousands of endoscopic and therapeutic ERCP procedures saving many lives. His work in this specialty has won many accolades with excellence and appreciation awards.
He is a keen researcher, dedicated Post-Graduate Teacher and a versatile speaker at medical conferences. He has more than 100 academic/scientific papers and chapters to his credit in national/international journals and books. He has contributed in the development of national guidelines in Indian Society of Gastroenterology (ISG) and API.
On a regional, national, and international level he has organized, participated in and delivered more than 300 lectures in numerous conferences. He has been the editor and served on the editorial board of various journals and books. His academic excellence and contributions have been recognized by several awards and orations including Best Papers Awards in India & UK. His publications during his tenure in UK led to his paper presentations in Leeds, UK 1987, France 1987, Netherland 1989, Spain 1989.
Dr. Upadhyay has undertaken a keen leadership role in organizations for enhancing India’s Health Care Services and Systems and promoting the specialty of Gastroenterology. He is a post graduate teacher and thesis guide for DNB students and has worked intensively towards improvement in medical education systems in India. He serves on the Advisory Board, National Board of Examinations and Member, Governing Body, AIIMS, Patna.
