Gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding is a serious condition that affects your digestive tract. The following organs make up your digestive tract: oesophagus, stomach, small intestine (including the duodenum), large intestine or colon, rectum, and anus. Any of these organs can experience GI bleeding. Upper GI bleeding occurs when bleeding occurs in the oesophagus, stomach, or first part of the small intestine (duodenum). Lower GI bleeding refers to bleeding in the lower small intestine, large intestine, rectum, or anus. The amount of bleeding you experience can range from nothing to a life-threatening haemorrhage. In some cases, there may be so little bleeding that blood can only be detected through stool testing.
