Therapeutic endoscopy is the medical term for an endoscopic procedure in which treatment is administered through the use of an endoscope. In contrast, diagnostic endoscopy is performed solely to see a portion of the gastrointestinal, respiratory, or urinary system in order to facilitate diagnosis. As time goes on, the nature of most fields of medicine is to use less intrusive diagnostic techniques more frequently in conjunction with therapies. A good example of minimally invasive techniques replacing invasive operations is the laparoscopic approach to cholecystectomy, which replaced the traditional open approach.
