The gallbladder is a pear-shaped organ situated on the upper right side of your abdomen, just below your liver. The surgical operation to remove it is called a cholecystectomy. Your gallbladder collects and holds bile, a digestive fluid produced by your liver. Cholecystectomy is a common operation with minimal chance of side effects. After a cholecystectomy, you can usually go home the same day. Typically, a cholecystectomy involves four tiny incisions through which a tiny video camera and specialized surgical equipment are inserted in order to view into your abdomen and remove the gallbladder. We call this process a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. On rare occasions, the gallbladder can be removed with a single, large incision.
