Alcohol-related liver disease (ARLD) is caused by liver damage from years of drinking too much. The liver can become inflamed and bloated by years of alcohol abuse. Scarring known as cirrhosis can also be caused by this damage. The final stage of liver disease is cirrhosis.

When this happens, symptoms can include:

  • feeling sick
  • weight loss
  • loss of appetite
  • yellowing of the eyes and skin (jaundice)
  • swelling in the ankles and tummy
